Download your selections onto a 1 GB+ USB thumb drive. Start by plugging your USB drive into an available 2.0 port. Locate the program maker's websites, by searching the name of the program itself, or download them from a trusted site such as CNET or ZDNET. Direct these downloads to the USB drive. Don't forget to periodically check for updates to programs and definitions.
7. Browse the contents of your USB drive, by accessing it through 'My Computer.' Double-click the program you wish to install and run. Update from your USB drive, if you had the ability to download new definitions along with the program install executable. The program may already have what it needs to detect and remove your infection. Run it. Follow the instructions for quarantining any infections found. If you are sure that these aren't 'false positives,' don't forget to empty (delete) the quarantine directory before closing the program. Most programs will offer an explanation or a definition of the supposed threat. Tips * If you find that you really like the free version, by all means, purchase a license. This not only supports the programmer's research and development, it usually unlocks additional features. * If you have a persistent infection, open System Restore and turn off monitoring to delete your restore points. Turn monitoring back on, once the infection has been eradicated. Create a clean restore point. Warnings * Be sure to scan your USB drive, since some viruses copy files to removable drives to help them spread to other computers. * You can install more than one anti spyware / anti malware program, with no problems. But, two or more anti virus programs running on the same machine will usually conflict with each other and give false-positives. * Be careful of what you delete!
