How to Turn Num Lock on by Default in Windows 7 & 8
By default, Num Lock is set to off on power up in Microsoft's Windows 7 & 8. This setting was turned on by default in earlier versions of the Windows operating system.
In earlier versions, it was possible to change this setting in the system Bios. To modify this setting, turning Num Lock on at power up, follow this simple tutorial.

1. Click the Start button, type regedit in the search bar and hit the Enter key. Click Yes in the User Account Control window, to open Regedit (in Windows 7). Windows 8 users; access the Run command window using the keyboard shortcut Win [Windows key] + R, then type regedit. Accept the User Account Control inquiry.

2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Keyboard. Double-click to modify the sting value of Initial Keyboad Indicators, changing the value from 2147483648 to 2147483650. If InitialKeyboadIndicators shows a value of 0, change the value to 2.
Note: this is not the string named "Default." Click on the image at left to enlarge 3. Exit the Registry. There is no Save option, or Crtl+Z shortcut to undo changes made. When you restart the computer, the new setting will automatically take effect.
Tips: * For added security, when using an alphanumeric logon password, leave NumLoc off. Just remember to hit NumLk on boot up. * To undo this edit, navigate to InitialKeyboadIndicators and change the value back to 2147483648.
